Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What did Lord find about negatively framed messages?

    Model answer

Negatively framed messages produced significantly lower belief in their arguments and a less favourable attitude than positively framed ones. Negative framing outperformed positive framing only on actual recycling behaviour, and only when the message came from a personal source.

  2. 2

Which source had the greatest effect on actual recycling behaviour?

    Model answer

The personal message from someone known to the resident produced the largest increase in observed recycling.

  3. 3

What did the study find about advertising?

    Model answer

Advertising improved attitudes to recycling relative to the control group, significantly so for the positively framed advertisement and only marginally for the negatively framed one. Its effect on actual behaviour was weaker than that of a personal message.

  4. 4

    What did Lord conclude?

    Model answer

Both what a recycling message says and who delivers it matter, and a personal source combined with appropriately framed content is the most effective way to change behaviour.

  5. 5

Give two strengths of the study.

    Model answer

It measured real recycling behaviour rather than relying on self-report alone, and it was conducted in a natural setting so the findings apply directly to real campaigns.

  6. 6

What is the main weakness of the sample?

    Model answer

The households came from a single affluent suburb with an established collection scheme, so the findings may not generalise to areas with poorer facilities or different cultures.
