Questionnaires, structured interviews and unstructured interviews
- 3 things to know
- Component 01
Overview
Recall questions on self-report techniques, the definition, strengths and weaknesses of questionnaires, structured interviews and unstructured interviews, and why unstructured interviews usually yield richer data.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why does an unstructured interview usually yield richer data?
What is meant by a self-report technique?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by a self-report technique?
Model answer
A method in which participants supply information about their own thoughts, feelings or behaviour rather than the researcher observing them.
- 2
Define the term questionnaire.
Model answer
A set of written questions, usually completed by the participant alone, designed to gather information on a particular topic.
- 3
Give two strengths of the questionnaire.
Model answer
Large samples can be reached quickly and cheaply, and answers given without a researcher present may be more honest on sensitive topics.
- 4
Give two weaknesses of the questionnaire.
Model answer
Response rates are often low and skewed towards particular types of person, and a misunderstood question cannot be clarified.
- 5
What is a structured interview?
Model answer
An interview in which every participant is asked the same pre-set questions in the same order, with no deviation.
- 6
Give one strength of the structured interview.
Model answer
Because the questions are standardised, the interview is easy to replicate and answers can be compared directly between participants.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Research Methods and Techniques, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
