Studying and Evaluating the Core Studies: The Common Framework
Reliability, ethics, sampling bias and ethnocentrism across the core studies
- 3 things to know
- Component 02
Overview
Recall questions on researcher bias, inter-rater, test-retest and split-half reliability, the BPS ethical principles, debriefing, deception and protection from harm, sampling bias in Milgram and other studies, ethnocentrism and generalisability.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Explain test–retest reliability.
What does split-half reliability assess?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is researcher bias and how can it be reduced?
Model answer
It is the researcher's expectations influencing how the study is run, recorded or interpreted, and it can be reduced by standardised procedures, blind recording and independent observers.
- 2
What is inter-rater reliability and how is it checked?
Model answer
It is the extent to which two or more observers recording the same behaviour agree, and it is checked by correlating their independent records of the same event.
- 3
Explain test–retest reliability.
Model answer
The same measure is given to the same people on two separate occasions, and consistent results across both indicate the measure is reliable.
- 4
What does split-half reliability assess?
Model answer
The internal consistency of a test, by comparing scores on one half of the items with scores on the other half.
- 5
Why does a highly standardised procedure improve reliability?
Model answer
Because every participant is treated the same way, the study can be repeated exactly and should produce consistent results.
- 6
List the four principles of the professional code of ethics used by psychologists in Britain.
Model answer
Respect, competence, responsibility and integrity.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Studying and Evaluating the Core Studies: The Common Framework, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
