Black and Black (2007) aircraft noise, stress and hypertension: results, conclusions and evaluation
- 3 things to know
- Component 03
Overview
Recall questions on Black and Black's findings on hypertension and other health complaints, their conclusion, and the evaluation of method, causation, self-reported health outcomes, response bias, social sensitivity and generalisability.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why can the study not establish that aircraft noise causes hypertension?
Give two strengths of the method used.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What did the study find about hypertension?
Model answer
Raw hypertension prevalence did not differ significantly between the noise-exposed and control areas, and was slightly higher in the control group. The significant finding was a mediated pathway: chronic noise exposure raised noise stress, and noise stress in turn was associated with hypertension.
- 2
Apart from hypertension, what else did the noise-exposed residents report?
Model answer
They reported greater noise annoyance, more sleep disturbance and more general health complaints than the comparison group.
- 3
What did Black and Black conclude?
Model answer
Chronic aircraft noise exposure is linked to chronic noise stress, which is in turn associated with hypertension, so airport noise is a public health problem and not merely an annoyance.
- 4
Give two strengths of the method used.
Model answer
The large sample improves representativeness, and combining objective noise contour data with a standardised questionnaire makes the measurement of exposure reliable.
- 5
Why can the study not establish that aircraft noise causes hypertension?
Model answer
Participants were not randomly allocated to noise conditions, so uncontrolled differences between the two areas could explain the health difference; the data are essentially correlational.
- 6
What is the main weakness of the way the health outcome was measured?
Model answer
Hypertension was self-reported rather than clinically measured, so undiagnosed cases were missed and reporting may have been inaccurate.
