Social, moral, cultural and spiritual issues raised by the applied topics
- 3 things to know
- Component 03
Overview
Recall questions on social, moral, cultural and spiritual issues raised by applied topics, how spiritual issues differ from moral ones, and examples from biochemical explanations, exercise programmes, hospital design, zero tolerance, children's advertising and recycling campaigns.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Give one spiritual consideration a psychologist should take into account when designing a health or exercise programme.
Why should an applied psychologist consider social, moral, cultural and spiritual issues before implementing a strategy?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by a social issue raised by an applied topic? Give an example.
Model answer
A social issue concerns the effects on groups, communities or relationships; for example, imprisoning offenders affects their children, families and communities as well as the offender.
- 2
What is meant by a moral issue raised by an applied topic, and what would be an example?
Model answer
A moral issue concerns whether an action is right or wrong; for example, whether it is right to detain and medicate someone against their will because they have been given a diagnosis.
- 3
What makes something a cultural issue in applied psychology? Illustrate your answer.
Model answer
A cultural issue concerns differences in norms, values and practices between groups; for example, judgements of abnormality depend on what a culture treats as normal behaviour.
- 4
What is a spiritual issue in applied psychology, and how might one arise for a client?
Model answer
A spiritual issue concerns people's religious or spiritual beliefs and their sense of meaning and purpose; for example, a client may understand their distress as a spiritual crisis rather than an illness.
- 5
Why are spiritual issues not simply the same as moral issues?
Model answer
Moral issues are about the rightness of an action, whereas spiritual issues are about belief, faith and meaning, so a treatment can be entirely moral yet still conflict with a person's spiritual beliefs.
- 6
What spiritual issue is raised by explaining mental illness purely as a biochemical imbalance?
Model answer
It reduces a person's suffering to chemistry, which may conflict with a belief that the self or soul is more than the body and that distress carries spiritual meaning.
