Impact of Piaget, Vygotsky and Bruner on education
- 3 things to know
- Component 03
Overview
Recall questions on the educational implications and criticism of Piaget's theory, Vygotsky's zone of proximal development and scaffolding, group work versus discovery learning, Bruner's modes of representation and the spiral curriculum.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Explain the practical difference between waiting for readiness and teaching within the zone of proximal development.
Give two educational implications of Piaget's theory.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Give two educational implications of Piaget's theory.
Model answer
Teaching should be matched to the child's current stage of readiness, and learning should be active discovery using concrete materials rather than being told the answer.
- 2
Give one criticism of Piaget's account of development.
Model answer
His tasks underestimated young children, because when the change in a conservation task is made to look accidental, or an egocentrism task is made meaningful to the child, far younger children succeed.
- 3
What did Vygotsky see as the driving force of cognitive development?
Model answer
Social interaction within a culture, as children learn by working alongside more knowledgeable people and internalising the language and thinking tools their culture provides.
- 4
Define the zone of proximal development.
Model answer
It is the gap between what a learner can already achieve alone and what they can achieve with guidance from someone more capable.
- 5
What is scaffolding?
Model answer
Scaffolding is temporary support from a more expert partner which is adjusted to the learner's current need and gradually withdrawn as competence grows.
- 6
Why does Vygotsky's theory encourage group work where Piaget's encourages individual discovery?
Model answer
Vygotsky treats learning as social, so dialogue with peers and adults is what creates development, whereas Piaget treats knowledge as constructed by the child, so the teacher's job is to supply materials and let the child find out.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Child Psychology, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
