Self-efficacy, sports confidence, sport orientation and imagery
- 3 things to know
- Component 03
Overview
Recall questions on self-efficacy and Bandura's four sources, self-confidence, Vealey's model of sport confidence, performance and outcome orientations, the Sport Orientation Questionnaire, imagery and its functions, the applied model of imagery, and intrinsic motivation.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Which source of self-efficacy is the most powerful, and why?
Why is a demonstration by a team-mate of similar ability more useful for building self-efficacy than one by an international star?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define self-efficacy.
Model answer
Self-efficacy is a person's belief that they can succeed at a specific task, skill or situation.
- 2
How does self-confidence differ from self-efficacy?
Model answer
Self-confidence is a broad, fairly stable certainty about being successful in sport generally, whereas self-efficacy is belief about one particular task, so a player can be highly efficacious at penalties yet low in overall sport confidence.
- 3
Name Bandura's four sources of self-efficacy.
Model answer
The four sources are performance accomplishments, vicarious experience, verbal persuasion and physiological or emotional states.
- 4
Which source of self-efficacy is the most powerful, and why?
Model answer
Performance accomplishments are the most powerful, because genuinely having done the thing before is far more convincing evidence of capability than anything a person is told or shown.
- 5
Why is a demonstration by a team-mate of similar ability more useful for building self-efficacy than one by an international star?
Model answer
Vicarious experience works through comparison, so watching someone the athlete sees as like themselves succeed makes it credible that they could succeed too, whereas an elite performer seems out of reach.
- 6
What makes verbal persuasion effective as a source of self-efficacy?
Model answer
It works when it comes from someone the athlete regards as knowledgeable and trustworthy, and when the encouragement is specific and believable rather than empty praise.
