Normal and skewed distributions and probability
- 3 things to know
- Component 01
Overview
Recall questions on the purpose of inferential tests, the normal distribution, positively and negatively skewed distributions and where the mean, median and mode lie, and probability in research findings.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Where do the mean, median and mode lie in a normal distribution?
What is a positively skewed distribution?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the purpose of an inferential statistical test?
Model answer
To judge how likely it is that the results occurred by chance, and so whether the null hypothesis can be rejected.
- 2
Describe the shape of a normal distribution curve.
Model answer
It is a symmetrical bell shape, with most scores clustered around the centre and progressively fewer towards each tail.
- 3
Where do the mean, median and mode lie in a normal distribution?
Model answer
All three fall at the same point, at the centre of the curve.
- 4
What is a positively skewed distribution?
Model answer
A distribution in which most scores are low and a long tail of high scores stretches out to the right.
- 5
In a positively skewed distribution, how are the mode, median and mean positioned relative to one another?
Model answer
The mode lies at the peak on the left, the median comes next, and the mean is pulled furthest to the right by the extreme scores.
- 6
What is a negatively skewed distribution?
Model answer
A distribution in which most scores are high and a long tail of low scores stretches out to the left.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Data Recording, Analysis and Presentation, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
