Moral development: what Lee et al. add to Kohlberg
- 3 things to know
- Component 02
Overview
Recall questions on the age ranges of Kohlberg and Lee et al., how far Lee et al. change understanding of moral development, whether they refute Kohlberg, evidence of development, objectivity, individual and cultural diversity, and judging morality across cultures.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
To what extent do Kohlberg and Lee et al. improve our understanding of cultural diversity?
What single message do the two studies together give about judging morality across cultures?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Contrast the age ranges studied.
Model answer
Kohlberg's participants were followed from early adolescence into adulthood, whereas Lee et al. studied children of seven, nine and eleven only.
- 2
To what extent does Lee et al. change our understanding of the key theme?
Model answer
Considerably, because it shows that alongside any universal development there are culturally specific values children absorb as they grow, so children of the same age in different countries can judge the same act in opposite ways.
- 3
Does Lee et al. refute Kohlberg?
Model answer
Not entirely, since the shared judgements about helping and harming fit a universal core, but the culturally patterned differences show that a purely stage-based account is incomplete.
- 4
Which study gives stronger evidence of genuine development, and why?
Model answer
Kohlberg's, because following the same individuals over years demonstrates real change within a person rather than a difference between separate age groups.
- 5
Which study is more objective, and why?
Model answer
Lee et al.'s, because ratings on a fixed scale can be compared directly, whereas placing an interview answer into a stage depends on the researcher's interpretation.
- 6
To what extent do Kohlberg and Lee et al. improve our understanding of individual diversity?
Model answer
Lee et al. improves matters by including girls as well as boys and so correcting the male-only basis of Kohlberg's scheme, although neither study reports much about differences between individual children.
