Cognitive overload and display design
- 3 things to know
- Component 03
Overview
Recall questions on ergonomics and human factors, cognitive overload and its consequences, working memory and display design, intrinsic and extraneous cognitive load, single-sensor-single-indicator displays, configural displays and emergent features.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why does working memory capacity matter for the design of workplace displays?
Distinguish intrinsic from extraneous cognitive load.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is ergonomics, also known as human factors?
Model answer
It is the study of how equipment, tasks and environments should be designed to fit human physical and cognitive capabilities and limitations.
- 2
What is cognitive overload?
Model answer
It is a state in which the information a person must process exceeds their limited attention and working memory capacity, so performance breaks down.
- 3
Name three consequences of cognitive overload at work.
Model answer
More errors and missed signals, slower responses, and raised stress and fatigue.
- 4
Why does working memory capacity matter for the design of workplace displays?
Model answer
Working memory can hold only a few items at once, so a display that forces the operator to remember several separate numbers and combine them will overload them.
- 5
Distinguish intrinsic from extraneous cognitive load.
Model answer
Intrinsic load comes from the inherent difficulty of the task itself, whereas extraneous load is added unnecessarily by poor design or presentation.
- 6
What is a single-sensor-single-indicator display, and what is its drawback?
Model answer
It shows one number for each measurement separately, so the operator has to read and mentally integrate them all, which is slow and effortful.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Environmental Psychology, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
