Reliability and sampling bias in the key research of applied psychology
- 3 things to know
- Component 03
Overview
Recall questions on internal, external, test-retest, split-half and inter-rater reliability, reliability and validity, sampling bias, volunteer, opportunity, snowball and random sampling, the samples in the prison, attachment, murderer, cockroach and airport studies, and standardisation versus ecological validity.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Give two ways a researcher can improve the reliability of an observation.
Why does reliability matter most when a measure is used to make a decision about an individual, such as a diagnosis or a selection test?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why does reliability matter most when a measure is used to make a decision about an individual, such as a diagnosis or a selection test?
Model answer
If the same person could obtain different results on different occasions, any decision based on the measure would be arbitrary, so an unreliable tool is unusable however sensible its content looks.
- 2
Distinguish internal reliability from external reliability.
Model answer
Internal reliability is consistency within a measure, so all its items assess the same thing, whereas external reliability is consistency of the measure across different occasions.
- 3
What is test-retest reliability and how is it checked?
Model answer
It is consistency over time, checked by giving the same test to the same people after an interval and correlating the two sets of scores.
- 4
What is split-half reliability?
Model answer
It is a check of internal consistency in which a test is divided into two halves and the scores on each half are correlated for the same participants.
- 5
What is inter-rater reliability and when does it matter most?
Model answer
It is the extent to which two or more observers, scoring independently, agree; it matters most in observations and in coding qualitative material such as interviews.
- 6
Give two ways a researcher can improve the reliability of an observation.
Model answer
Use clearly operationalised behavioural categories in a coding frame, and train observers together before the study so they apply the categories in the same way.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Methodological Issues and Debates Running Through Applied Psychology, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
