Smith et al. (1979) coach effectiveness training: background and procedure
- 1 thing to know
- Component 03
Overview
Recall questions on the aim, method and variables of Smith et al.'s 1979 study of coach effectiveness training, the coaches and players, the behavioural guidelines and training session, feedback and self-monitoring, data collection, and observed differences in coaches' behaviour.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What was the aim of Smith et al.'s study?
Model answer
They aimed to test whether a training programme based on empirically derived behavioural guidelines could improve youth baseball coaches' relationship skills, and to assess the effects on the coaches' behaviour and on their players' attitudes and self-esteem.
- 2
What research method was used, and what were the variables?
Model answer
It was a field experiment in real leagues during a real season, in which the independent variable was whether a coach attended the training session or was in the no-treatment control group, and the dependent variables were the coaches' observed behaviours, the players' perceptions of them and the players' attitudes and self-esteem.
- 3
Who were the coaches in the study?
Model answer
Thirty-four male Little League baseball coaches from the Seattle area were recruited, 18 randomly assigned to training and 16 to control, and three control coaches were lost during the season leaving 18 and 13. Their mean age was 36.10 years and they had an average of 8.37 years of coaching experience.
- 4
How many players took part, and what were they asked to do?
Model answer
A total of 325 boys, which was 82% of those who played for the coaches involved, were individually interviewed about their perceptions of their coach and their attitudes to themselves, their coach, their team-mates and the sport.
- 5
Where did the behavioural guidelines given to the coaches come from?
Model answer
They were derived empirically from an earlier investigation of 51 coaches and 542 of their players, which linked observed coaching behaviours to how players perceived and reacted to them.
- 6
What did the training session involve, and what did the guidelines tell the coaches to do?
Model answer
It was a single evening session of about two hours in which the guidelines were presented verbally and in writing, supported by modelling of desirable and undesirable responses and a brochure of practical suggestions. The guidelines stressed reinforcement, encouragement and technical instruction, aiming to increase positive interaction and reduce fear of failure.
