Environmental Psychology
Crowding, heat and pollution and their impact on biological responses
- 3 things to know
- Component 03
Overview
Recall questions on density and crowding, crowding, heat and air pollution as stressors, adaptation, individual differences in stress, nature and nurture, reductionism, and blood pressure as a measure of environmental stress.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is meant by adaptation to an environmental stressor, and why is it not necessarily protective?
Distinguish between density and crowding.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Distinguish between density and crowding.
Model answer
Density is the objective number of people in a given space, whereas crowding is the unpleasant subjective feeling that there are too many people for the space available.
- 2
How does crowding act as a biological stressor?
Model answer
Crowding reduces perceived control and intrudes on personal space, raising physiological arousal, blood pressure and cortisol, which over time is linked to higher rates of illness.
- 3
How does high ambient temperature affect the body and behaviour?
Model answer
Heat raises arousal and discomfort, increases irritability and aggression, and forces the body to work harder to thermoregulate, which impairs concentration and performance.
- 4
State one effect of air pollution on psychological functioning.
Model answer
Exposure to polluted air is associated with raised stress hormone levels, poorer cognitive performance and more reports of low mood.
- 5
What is meant by adaptation to an environmental stressor, and why is it not necessarily protective?
Model answer
Adaptation is the fall in conscious annoyance after long exposure, but the physiological stress response can continue, so damage accumulates even when the person no longer notices the stressor.
- 6
Why do two people exposed to identical noise levels differ in how stressed they become?
Model answer
Individual differences in noise sensitivity, appraisal, perceived control, personality and coping resources mean the same objective stressor is experienced very differently.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Environmental Psychology, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
