Distinguishing levels of measurement
- 3 things to know
- Component 01
Overview
Recall questions on the three levels of measurement, why nominal data cannot be ranked or averaged, what ordinal data adds, why rating scales are ordinal, and why means suit interval data.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why can a mean be calculated from interval data but not properly from ordinal data?
Name the three levels of measurement.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Name the three levels of measurement.
Model answer
Nominal, ordinal and interval.
- 2
Why can nominal data not be ranked or averaged?
Model answer
The categories differ only in kind and carry no order or numerical size, so the only summary available is a count of how many fall into each one.
- 3
Give an example of nominal data from an observation.
Model answer
The number of children recorded in each behavioural category, such as how many shared, how many played alone and how many argued.
- 4
State the one thing ordinal data tells you that nominal data does not.
Model answer
Ordinal data tells you the order of the cases, so one can be said to be higher or lower than another, whereas nominal data records only which category each case falls into.
- 5
Why is a score from a rating scale treated as ordinal rather than interval?
Model answer
The scale is subjective, so the psychological distance between 4 and 5 is not necessarily the same as between 1 and 2.
- 6
Why can a mean be calculated from interval data but not properly from ordinal data?
Model answer
Interval data is measured in equal units of a publicly agreed size, so the scores can meaningfully be added and divided, whereas the gaps between ordinal ranks are unequal and unknown so their total has no meaning.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Mathematical Requirements for Research Methods, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
