Non-biological treatments: CBT, REBT and systematic desensitisation
- 3 things to know
- Component 03
Overview
Recall questions on cognitive behavioural therapy for depression including thought diaries, Socratic questioning, behavioural activation and homework, Ellis's rational emotive behaviour therapy, comparisons with antidepressants, and systematic desensitisation, exposure and flooding for phobias.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Outline the three stages of systematic desensitisation.
A client with severe depression cannot concentrate for more than a few minutes. How should treatment be sequenced?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
On what assumption does cognitive behavioural therapy for depression rest?
Model answer
That distress is maintained by faulty thinking, so changing how a person interprets events will change how they feel and how they behave.
- 2
Describe the relationship between therapist and client in cognitive behavioural therapy.
Model answer
It is collaborative and time-limited, typically around six to twenty weekly sessions, in which the two agree goals and work as partners rather than the therapist interpreting on the client's behalf.
- 3
What is the purpose of a thought diary?
Model answer
It makes negative automatic thoughts visible by recording the situation, the thought and the resulting feeling, so that they can be examined rather than simply accepted.
- 4
What is Socratic questioning?
Model answer
It is the use of open questions that lead clients to weigh the evidence for their own beliefs and reach their own conclusions, instead of being told that they are wrong.
- 5
Explain the idea of treating the client as a scientist.
Model answer
The client's belief is treated as a hypothesis and tested against reality in a behavioural experiment, so that evidence rather than argument is what changes the belief.
- 6
What is behavioural activation, and why is it used in depression?
Model answer
It is the scheduling of manageable and rewarding activities to reverse the withdrawal and inactivity of depression, which would otherwise remove the very experiences that could lift mood.
