Lewis et al. (2014) dance and mood in Parkinson's disease: background and procedure
- 2 things to know
- Component 03
Overview
Recall questions on the aim, method and design of Lewis et al.'s 2014 study of social dance and mood in Parkinson's disease, its independent variables, participants and control group, the Profile of Mood States, total mood disturbance, the dance intervention and short cycle measures.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How is a total mood disturbance score obtained from the Profile of Mood States?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What was the aim of Lewis et al.'s study?
Model answer
They aimed to examine how dance affects mood in older people, and particularly in people with Parkinson's disease, across both a long cycle of twelve weeks and a short cycle of one class.
- 2
What research method and design did Lewis et al. use?
Model answer
It was an experiment using a mixed design, combining matched participants for the comparison of groups with repeated measures for the comparison across time, and the dependent variable was participants' mood scores.
- 3
Identify the two independent variables in the study.
Model answer
The first was the naturally occurring variable of group, that is whether a participant had Parkinson's disease or was a control, and the second was time cycle, either long cycle from week one to week twelve or short cycle from before to after a class.
- 4
Who took part in Lewis et al.'s study?
Model answer
Thirty-seven people aged between 50 and 80 years took part, with a mean age of 65.5 years, of whom 22 had Parkinson's disease rated by physiotherapists as mild to moderate and 15 acted as age-matched controls.
- 5
Who made up the control group, and how were participants recruited?
Model answer
The controls were fifteen age-matched older adults, eight of whom were partners of the Parkinson's participants and many of whom were their carers, all recruited through local advertisements and support groups so the sample was self-selecting.
- 6
What is the Profile of Mood States, and what does it measure?
Model answer
It is a 64-item mood questionnaire answered on a five-point scale and scored on the six subscales of tension, vigour, depression, fatigue, anger and confusion, with lower scores meaning a more positive mood on every subscale except vigour, where a higher score is better.
