Validity in the key research of applied psychology
- 3 things to know
- Component 03
Overview
Recall questions on valid conclusions, internal validity and pre-existing groups, external, ecological and population validity, face, construct, concurrent and criterion validity, threats to internal validity, demand characteristics and social desirability in the key research.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why does comparing groups that already differ, such as offenders and non-offenders, weaken internal validity?
Why is construct validity particularly hard to establish for a measure of psychopathy or of anxiety?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does it mean to say that the conclusion of a piece of key research is valid, rather than its measure?
Model answer
It means the interpretation placed on the results is properly supported by the data, so the study justifies the claim being made and not a stronger one.
- 2
Why does comparing groups that already differ, such as offenders and non-offenders, weaken internal validity?
Model answer
The groups differ in many ways besides the one being studied, so any difference found cannot confidently be attributed to that variable rather than to something else about the people in each group.
- 3
State the two questions you should ask when judging the external validity of a piece of key research.
Model answer
Whether the people studied represent the wider group the claim is about, and whether the setting and task resemble the real situation to which the claim is meant to apply.
- 4
Define ecological validity.
Model answer
Ecological validity is the extent to which the task and setting reflect real life closely enough for the findings to apply to everyday behaviour.
- 5
Define population validity.
Model answer
Population validity is the extent to which the findings from a sample can be generalised to the wider target population it was drawn from.
- 6
How would a researcher check the face validity of a new questionnaire on exercise motivation?
Model answer
They would ask people to read the items and judge whether they obviously appear to be asking about motivation to exercise rather than about something else.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Methodological Issues and Debates Running Through Applied Psychology, on a schedule.
