Van Leeuwen et al. (2008) twin-family study of IQ: background and procedure
- 3 things to know
- Component 03
Overview
Recall questions on the aim of Van Leeuwen et al.'s 2008 twin-family study of IQ, why parents were included, the Dutch families who took part, the Raven's matrices tests used for children and parents, and how testing was carried out.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How many families took part in Van Leeuwen et al. (2008), and where were they from?
Who made up each of the families?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State the aim of Van Leeuwen et al. (2008).
Model answer
They aimed to estimate the genetic and environmental contributions to general intelligence, and to test whether resemblance between parents and children is caused by shared genes or by the environment parents provide.
- 2
Why did Van Leeuwen et al. use a twin-family design rather than twins alone?
Model answer
Including parents and an older sibling as well as the twins allowed genetic transmission to be separated from cultural transmission, and allowed the effect of parents resembling each other in intelligence to be modelled.
- 3
How many families took part in Van Leeuwen et al. (2008), and where were they from?
Model answer
The study used 112 families drawn from a Dutch twin register.
- 4
Who made up each of the families?
Model answer
Each family contained a pair of nine-year-old twins, an additional older sibling aged between 10 and 14, and both parents.
- 5
Which intelligence test did the children complete?
Model answer
The children completed Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices, a non-verbal test of general reasoning.
- 6
Which version of the test did the parents complete, and why a different one?
Model answer
The parents completed Raven's Advanced Progressive Matrices, because the standard version is too easy for adults and would not discriminate between them.
