Freewill, determinism, reductionism and holism across applied psychology
- 3 things to know
- Component 03
Overview
Recall questions on freewill, hard and soft determinism, types of determinism in explanations of mental illness, determinism and the law, adolescent risk-taking, the difference between reductionism and determinism, levels of explanation, holism, and reductionist accounts of disorder and aircraft noise stress.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define holism and give one explanation of mental illness that takes a holistic view.
Which explanation of mental illness is an example of psychic determinism, and why?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define freewill.
Model answer
Freewill is the idea that people are able to choose how to behave and are not entirely controlled by internal or external forces.
- 2
If behaviour is determined, what follows for the treatment of disorder or the reduction of offending?
Model answer
If a behaviour has identifiable causes then altering those causes should alter the behaviour, which is what makes therapy and crime-reduction programmes worth attempting at all.
- 3
Why do offender treatment programmes assume soft rather than hard determinism?
Model answer
They accept that biology and upbringing push a person towards offending, but they depend on that person still being able to choose differently once given the skills to do so, which hard determinism would deny.
- 4
Name three types of determinism used in psychology and state what each says causes behaviour.
Model answer
Biological determinism says genes, hormones and brain function cause behaviour; environmental determinism says conditioning and external stimuli cause it; psychic determinism says unconscious conflicts cause it.
- 5
Which explanation of mental illness is an example of psychic determinism, and why?
Model answer
The psychodynamic explanation, because it traces adult symptoms to unconscious conflicts formed in early childhood that the person cannot access or control.
- 6
Explain why the behaviourist explanation of mental illness is a form of environmental determinism.
Model answer
It claims disordered behaviour is learned through conditioning and reinforcement from the environment, so the person's history of learning determines their symptoms.
