Carboxylic acids, bases and salts
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Recall questions on Carboxylic acids, bases and salts.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why does a carboxylic acid react with a carbonate while an alcohol of similar size does not?
25.0 cm³ of an ethanoic acid solution is neutralised by 22.50 cm³ of 0.100 mol dm⁻³ sodium hydroxide. Calculate the concentration of the acid.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the functional group of a carboxylic acid?
Model answer
The carboxyl group, –COOH, which is a carbonyl group and a hydroxyl group both attached to the same carbon atom.
- 2
Ethanoic acid is described as a weak acid. What does this mean?
Model answer
In aqueous solution only a small proportion of its molecules release a hydrogen ion, so an equilibrium is set up: CH₃COOH(aq) ⇌ CH₃COO⁻(aq) + H⁺(aq). Most of the acid stays as intact molecules.
- 3
What is the equation for the reaction of ethanoic acid with sodium hydroxide and name the salt?
Model answer
CH₃COOH + NaOH → CH₃COONa + H₂O. The salt is sodium ethanoate.
- 4
What is the equation for the reaction of propanoic acid with potassium hydroxide and name the salt?
Model answer
CH₃CH₂COOH + KOH → CH₃CH₂COOK + H₂O. The salt is potassium propanoate.
- 5
What is seen when sodium carbonate solution is added to ethanoic acid, and what is the equation?
Model answer
There is vigorous effervescence as carbon dioxide is given off. 2CH₃COOH + Na₂CO₃ → 2CH₃COONa + H₂O + CO₂.
- 6
What is the equation for the reaction of ethanoic acid with magnesium, and what would you see?
Model answer
The equation is 2CH₃COOH + Mg → (CH₃COO)₂Mg + H₂. Steady effervescence is seen and the magnesium gradually disappears as it dissolves, the gas released being hydrogen, which gives a squeaky pop with a lighted splint. The solution left contains the salt magnesium ethanoate.
