Equilibrium Constants
Writing equilibrium constant expressions and deriving their units
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 3
Overview
Twenty-one recall questions on writing equilibrium constant expressions and deriving their units.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Write the expression for Kc for the reaction N₂(g) + 3H₂(g) ⇌ 2NH₃(g).
Write the expression for Kc for the reaction 2SO₂(g) + O₂(g) ⇌ 2SO₃(g).
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does the equilibrium constant Kc express?
Model answer
It is the ratio of the equilibrium concentrations of the products to those of the reactants, each raised to the power of its coefficient in the balanced equation. Its value is fixed for a given reaction at a given temperature.
- 2
Write the expression for Kc for the reaction N₂(g) + 3H₂(g) ⇌ 2NH₃(g).
Model answer
Kc = [NH₃]² / ([N₂] × [H₂]³), where each square bracket is the equilibrium concentration in mol dm⁻³.
- 3
Write the expression for Kc for the reaction 2SO₂(g) + O₂(g) ⇌ 2SO₃(g).
Model answer
Kc = [SO₃]² / ([SO₂]² x [O₂]).
- 4
Write the expression for Kc for the reaction PCl₅(g) ⇌ PCl₃(g) + Cl₂(g).
Model answer
Kc = ([PCl₃] × [Cl₂]) / [PCl₅].
- 5
How are the units of Kc worked out?
Model answer
Each concentration term carries units of mol dm⁻³, raised to the power that appears in the expression. The units are found by substituting mol dm⁻³ for every term and cancelling, so overall they are (mol dm⁻³) raised to the power of the number of moles on the product side minus the number on the reactant side.
- 6
Derive the units of Kc for N₂(g) + 3H₂(g) ⇌ 2NH₃(g).
Model answer
The expression gives (mol dm⁻³)² divided by (mol dm⁻³) × (mol dm⁻³)³, that is (mol dm⁻³)² over (mol dm⁻³)⁴. This leaves (mol dm⁻³)⁻², which is written mol⁻² dm⁶.
