Units, standard form and proportion in chemical calculation: proportion
- 3 things to know
- All units
Overview
Thirteen recall questions on units, standard form and proportion in chemical calculation: proportion.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
For N₂O₄(g) ⇌ 2NO₂(g), ΔH is +57 kJ mol⁻¹. Estimate how Kc changes when the temperature is raised from 298 K to 350 K.
A student adds a catalyst to an equilibrium mixture and predicts that Kc will double. Evaluate this prediction.

Calculate the atom economy for the production of ethanol by fermentation, C₆H₁₂O₆ → 2C₂H₅OH + 2CO₂. (M(C₆H₁₂O₆) = 180.0, M(C₂H₅OH) = 46.0 g mol⁻¹)
Model answer
Mass of ethanol formed from one mole of glucose = 2 × 46.0 = 92.0 g. Atom economy = 92.0 ÷ 180.0 × 100 = 51.1%.
- 2
Why does the direct hydration of ethene, C₂H₄ + H₂O → C₂H₅OH, have an atom economy of 100% even though its percentage yield is much lower?
Model answer
Atom economy is fixed by the balanced equation: every atom of both reactants appears in the single product, so it is 100%. Percentage yield is a separate measure that depends on how far the reaction proceeds and on losses during the process, and for an equilibrium reaction run in one pass it is far below 100%. A reaction can have perfect atom economy and a poor yield.
- 3
Calculate the atom economy for the extraction of iron in the reaction Fe₂O₃ + 3CO → 2Fe + 3CO₂. (Ar: Fe 55.8, O 16.0, C 12.0)
Model answer
M(Fe₂O₃) = 159.6 and M(CO) = 28.0, so the total reactant mass is 159.6 + (3 × 28.0) = 243.6. The desired product mass is 2 × 55.8 = 111.6. Atom economy = 111.6 ÷ 243.6 × 100 = 45.8%.
- 4
Calculate the percentage by mass of nitrogen in ammonium nitrate, NH₄NO₃. (Ar: N 14.0, H 1.0, O 16.0)
Model answer
M(NH₄NO₃) = (2 × 14.0) + (4 × 1.0) + (3 × 16.0) = 28.0 + 4.0 + 48.0 = 80.0. Percentage nitrogen = 28.0 ÷ 80.0 × 100 = 35.0%.
- 5
A 2.43 g sample of magnesium burns completely in oxygen to form 4.03 g of magnesium oxide. Use these masses to determine the empirical formula of the oxide. (Ar: Mg 24.3, O 16.0)
Model answer
The mass of oxygen combined is 4.03 − 2.43 = 1.60 g. The amount of magnesium is 2.43 ÷ 24.3 = 0.100 mol and the amount of oxygen is 1.60 ÷ 16.0 = 0.100 mol. The ratio is 0.100 : 0.100, that is 1 : 1, so the empirical formula is MgO.
- 6
How is a ratio used to balance the equation for the complete combustion of propane?
Model answer
The carbon and hydrogen atoms in one molecule of C₃H₈ fix the products as 3CO₂ and 4H₂O. Counting oxygen atoms on the right gives (3 × 2) + 4 = 10, so 5O₂ is needed. The balanced equation is C₃H₈ + 5O₂ → 3CO₂ + 4H₂O, with the coefficients read as a mole ratio of 1 : 5 : 3 : 4.
