Ethanoylation of primary amines
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 4
Overview
Recall questions on ethanoylation of an amine.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why are two moles of amine usually used for every mole of ethanoyl chloride?
Why is the product of ethanoylation no longer basic?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by the ethanoylation of an amine?
Model answer
It is the replacement of a hydrogen atom on the nitrogen by a CH₃CO group. A primary amine RNH₂ is converted into an N-substituted amide, RNHCOCH₃.
- 2
What reagent and conditions ethanoylate a primary amine?
Model answer
Ethanoyl chloride, CH₃COCl, is added to the amine at room temperature; no catalyst or heating is needed. The reaction is vigorous, so the acid chloride is added slowly and the mixture is cooled.
- 3
Write an equation for the reaction of ethylamine with ethanoyl chloride and name the organic product.
Model answer
The equation is CH₃CH₂NH₂ + CH₃COCl → CH₃CONHCH₂CH₃ + HCl. The product is N-ethylethanamide.
- 4
Why are two moles of amine usually used for every mole of ethanoyl chloride?
Model answer
Hydrogen chloride is released, and because the amine is a base it would be protonated and taken out of play. A second mole of amine is therefore used to neutralise the hydrogen chloride, forming the alkylammonium chloride, so the equation becomes 2CH₃CH₂NH₂ + CH₃COCl → CH₃CONHCH₂CH₃ + CH₃CH₂NH₃Cl.
- 5
What would you see when ethanoyl chloride is added to phenylamine?
Model answer
There is a vigorous, exothermic reaction and steamy fumes of hydrogen chloride are given off. A white crystalline solid, N-phenylethanamide, is left behind, and it can be purified by recrystallisation from hot water.
- 6
Write an equation for the ethanoylation of phenylamine.
Model answer
The equation is C₆H₅NH₂ + CH₃COCl → CH₃CONHC₆H₅ + HCl. The organic product, N-phenylethanamide, is a white crystalline solid.
