Valence shells that break the octet rule: structure and bonding in Al2Cl6 and formation
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 3
Overview
Recall questions on structure, bonding in Al2Cl6 and formation.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Ammonia and boron trifluoride combine to form a white solid. Explain how the bond between them is formed.
Identify the donor and the acceptor in the compound NH₃.BF₃ and explain your choice.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Solid aluminium chloride vaporises to give molecules of formula Al₂Cl₆. Explain how two AlCl₃ units join together.
Model answer
A lone pair on a chlorine atom of one AlCl₃ unit is donated into the vacant orbital on the aluminium atom of the other unit, and a second chlorine does the same in the opposite direction. Two chlorine bridges are formed by these dative covalent bonds, holding the dimer together.
- 2
In the Al₂Cl₆ dimer, what is the coordination number and shape at each aluminium atom?
Model answer
Each aluminium is bonded to four chlorine atoms, two terminal and two bridging, so the coordination number is four and the arrangement around each aluminium is approximately tetrahedral.
- 3
Why does aluminium chloride dimerise at all?
Model answer
In the monomer aluminium has only six electrons in its valence shell. By accepting a lone pair from a chlorine of a second molecule it gains a fourth bonding pair and completes its octet, which lowers the energy of the system.
- 4
How do the bridging Al–Cl bonds in Al₂Cl₆ compare with the terminal ones?
Model answer
The bridging bonds are longer and weaker than the terminal bonds. Each bridging chlorine is shared between two aluminium atoms, so the bonding is spread over two links rather than concentrated in one.
- 5
Under what conditions is Al₂Cl₆ found, and what happens to it at high temperature?
Model answer
It is found in the vapour just above the sublimation temperature and in solution in non-polar solvents such as benzene. On strong heating the dative bridge bonds break and the dimer dissociates into planar AlCl₃ monomers.
- 6
Define a dative covalent bond.
Model answer
It is a covalent bond in which both of the shared electrons come from the same atom, the donor, while the other atom, the acceptor, supplies an empty orbital.
