Half-equations, half-cells and cell diagrams
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 3
Overview
Recall questions on half-equation, half-equation linking Fe³⁺ and Fe²⁺, half-cell, metal–metal ion half-cell made from.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is the cell diagram for a standard hydrogen electrode joined to a standard zinc half-cell?
Why can the two solutions in a cell not simply be joined by a copper wire?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a half-equation?
Model answer
An equation showing only the oxidation or only the reduction part of a redox change, with electrons written explicitly on one side to balance the charge.
- 2
What is the half-equation for the oxidation of zinc metal?
Model answer
Zn(s) → Zn²⁺(aq) + 2e⁻.
- 3
What is the half-equation for the reduction of copper(II) ions to copper?
Model answer
Cu²⁺(aq) + 2e⁻ → Cu(s).
- 4
What is the half-equation linking Fe³⁺ and Fe²⁺?
Model answer
Fe³⁺(aq) + e⁻ ⇌ Fe²⁺(aq). Written as a reduction it shows the iron(III) ion gaining one electron.
- 5
What is the half-equation for the reduction of hydrogen ions to hydrogen gas?
Model answer
2H⁺(aq) + 2e⁻ → H₂(g).
- 6
Why must a half-equation balance for charge as well as for atoms?
Model answer
Charge cannot be created or destroyed any more than atoms can. The electrons written into the equation are what make the total charge on the left equal the total charge on the right, and their number is the number transferred in the reaction.
