Symbols, rearranging equations and logarithms: chemical symbols and what each one asserts
- 3 things to know
- All units
Overview
Recall questions on chemical symbols and what each one asserts.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
A student writes 'Kc > 1, so the reaction has gone to completion'. Correct this statement.
Write, using an appropriate symbol, the relationship between the boiling temperatures of water and hydrogen sulfide, and justify your choice of symbol.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does the symbol ⇌ tell you about a chemical reaction, and how does it differ in meaning from →?
Model answer
The ⇌ sign shows that the reaction is reversible and, in a closed system, will reach a dynamic equilibrium in which the forward and reverse reactions continue at equal rates and the concentrations of all species stay constant. A single arrow → indicates a reaction treated as going essentially to completion, leaving negligible reactant.
- 2
In the statement Ka << 1, what does the symbol << convey about the acid?
Model answer
The symbol << means 'is much less than', not merely 'less than'. It says the acid dissociation constant is smaller than one by several orders of magnitude, so the position of the dissociation equilibrium lies far to the left and only a very small fraction of the acid molecules are ionised. The acid is weak.
- 3
Explain the meaning of the statement [H⁺]from water << [H⁺]from acid in a solution of hydrochloric acid.
Model answer
It states that the hydrogen ions contributed by the self-ionisation of water are negligible in comparison with those from the acid, so the water contribution can be ignored when calculating pH. The << symbol signals that the difference is large enough to justify neglecting one term entirely.
- 4
What does the symbol ∝ mean, and what does 'rate ∝ [A]' tell you about the order of reaction with respect to A?
Model answer
The symbol means 'is proportional to': the two quantities change by the same factor, so doubling one doubles the other. Rate ∝ [A] means the reaction is first order with respect to A. The proportionality becomes an equation once a constant is introduced, here rate = k[A], provided the temperature is constant.
- 5
Rewrite the statement 'at constant temperature, the volume of a fixed mass of gas is inversely proportional to its pressure' using symbols, and say what happens if the pressure is trebled.
Model answer
V ∝ 1/p, or equivalently pV = constant. Trebling the pressure reduces the volume to one third of its original value.
- 6
The ideal gas equation can be written V ∝ T for a fixed amount of gas at constant pressure. What must the temperature be measured in for this to hold?
Model answer
The temperature must be in kelvin. Proportionality requires that the quantity be zero when the volume is zero, and only the absolute scale has its zero at that point. On the Celsius scale, doubling the numerical temperature from 10 °C to 20 °C does not double the volume.
