Key term

Write the general formula of an α-amino acid and explain what each part of it represents.

Key term

Give the structural formula of alanine, the α-amino acid whose side chain is a methyl group.

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What makes an amino acid an α-amino acid?

    Model answer

The amine group is attached to the carbon atom immediately next to the carboxyl group. That carbon is called the α-carbon, so the −NH₂ and the −COOH are on adjacent carbon atoms rather than being separated by a longer chain.

  2. 2

Write the general formula of an α-amino acid and explain what each part of it represents.

    Model answer

The general formula is RCH(NH₂)COOH. The α-carbon carries four things: a hydrogen atom, a carboxyl group −COOH, an amine group −NH₂, and a side chain R that differs from one amino acid to the next.

  3. 3

Name the simplest α-amino acid and give its structural formula.

    Model answer

It is glycine, H₂NCH₂COOH. Its side chain R is simply a hydrogen atom, so the α-carbon carries two hydrogen atoms.

  4. 4

Give the structural formula of alanine, the α-amino acid whose side chain is a methyl group.

    Model answer

Alanine is CH₃CH(NH₂)COOH. The α-carbon carries a methyl group, a hydrogen atom, an amine group and a carboxyl group.

  5. 5

On what basis are α-amino acids classified into groups?

    Model answer

They are classified by the nature of the R side chain, because the −NH₂ and −COOH on the α-carbon are the same in all of them. The usual groups are non-polar side chains made only of hydrocarbon, polar but uncharged side chains containing an −OH or similar, acidic side chains carrying a second carboxyl group, and basic side chains carrying a second amine group.

  6. 6

An α-amino acid has the side chain −CH₂COOH. Into which class does it fall, and what will it do in water?

    Model answer

It is an acidic amino acid, because the side chain carries a second carboxyl group. In water that extra −COOH can lose a proton to give −CH₂COO⁻, so the molecule can carry an overall negative charge at ordinary pH.
