Structural isomerism
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Recall questions on structural isomers.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What are structural isomers?
Why can two structural isomers behave completely differently in chemical reactions?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What are structural isomers?
Model answer
Structural isomers are compounds with the same molecular formula but a different structural formula, that is, the same atoms joined together in a different order.
- 2
Name the three kinds of structural isomerism and give a one-line description of each.
Model answer
Chain isomerism, in which the carbon skeleton is arranged differently, for example straight-chain against branched; position isomerism, in which the same functional group sits on a different carbon of the same skeleton; and functional group isomerism, in which the atoms are rearranged into a completely different functional group.
- 3
How many structural isomers have the molecular formula C₄H₁₀, and what are they called?
Model answer
There are two: butane, an unbranched four-carbon chain, and 2-methylpropane, a three-carbon chain with a methyl branch on the middle carbon.
- 4
How many structural isomers have the molecular formula C₅H₁₂? Name them.
Model answer
There are three: pentane, 2-methylbutane and 2,2-dimethylpropane.
- 5
Give the five structural isomers of C₆H₁₄.
Model answer
They are hexane, 2-methylpentane, 3-methylpentane, 2,2-dimethylbutane and 2,3-dimethylbutane.
- 6
How many structural isomers have the formula C₃H₇Br?
Model answer
There are two, 1-bromopropane with the bromine on an end carbon and 2-bromopropane with the bromine on the middle carbon, and they are position isomers of each other.
