- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Recall questions on formula of ammonium sulfate.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Deduce the formulae of iron(III) sulfate and ammonium sulfate, and explain why calcium nitrate needs brackets.
Work out the formula of calcium nitrate.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How do you work out the formula of an ionic compound from the charges on its ions?
Model answer
Take the smallest whole-number ratio of cations to anions that makes the total positive charge equal to the total negative charge, so that the compound is electrically neutral overall. For example Al³⁺ and O²⁻ combine in the ratio 2 : 3 to give Al₂O₃, since 2 × (+3) = 3 × (−2) = 6.
- 2
Work out the formula of calcium nitrate.
Model answer
Calcium is Ca²⁺ and nitrate is NO₃⁻, so two nitrate ions balance one calcium ion. The formula is Ca(NO₃)₂.
- 3
Why does the formula of calcium nitrate need brackets while the formula of calcium chloride does not?
Model answer
Nitrate is a group of atoms, NO₃⁻, and the subscript 2 must apply to the whole group, so brackets are needed to give Ca(NO₃)₂. Chloride is a single atom, so CaCl₂ is unambiguous without them.
- 4
Deduce the formula of iron(III) sulfate.
Model answer
The ions are Fe³⁺ and SO₄²⁻. Two Fe³⁺ give +6 and three SO₄²⁻ give −6, so the formula is Fe₂(SO₄)₃.
- 5
What is the formula of ammonium sulfate?
Model answer
Ammonium is NH₄⁺ and sulfate is SO₄²⁻, so two ammonium ions are needed for each sulfate ion, giving (NH₄)₂SO₄.
- 6
Give the formulae of sodium phosphate and magnesium hydroxide.
Model answer
Sodium phosphate is Na₃PO₄, because three Na⁺ balance one PO₄³⁻. Magnesium hydroxide is Mg(OH)₂, because two OH⁻ balance one Mg²⁺.
