Overview
Recall questions on Research and referencing.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What must a citation of an online source include that a citation of a book does not, and why?
Why should the details of a source be recorded at the moment it is used rather than at the end of a project?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why is an experimental value compared with a literature value from a data book?
Model answer
The accepted value provides an independent standard against which the accuracy of the result can be judged. The size and direction of the difference then point to the systematic errors in the method.
- 2
What features make a source of chemical data reliable?
Model answer
It should be published by a recognised body such as a scientific society, a university or an established publisher, have identifiable authors, and where possible be peer-reviewed. A recent edition, clearly stated measurement conditions and the absence of any commercial interest in the result all add to its reliability.
- 3
Why should a value taken from a general web page be treated with caution?
Model answer
Anyone can publish a web page, and there is often no named author, no date and no indication of where the value came from. Values are frequently copied between sites, so several pages agreeing may all trace back to one unchecked source.
- 4
Why must the conditions be quoted alongside a literature value?
Model answer
Physical quantities depend on conditions: a boiling temperature depends on pressure, a density and a solubility on temperature, and an enthalpy change on the states of the substances involved. A value without its conditions cannot be compared meaningfully with a measurement.
- 5
What information must a citation of a book contain?
Model answer
The author or authors, the year of publication, the full title, the edition where relevant, the publisher and the place of publication. The page number should be given for a specific value or quotation.
- 6
What must a citation of an online source include that a citation of a book does not, and why?
Model answer
The full web address and the date on which the page was accessed. Web pages can be edited or removed without notice, so the access date records the version of the page that was actually used.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Planning, Analysis and Evaluation, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
