Electrophilic addition, Markovnikov's rule and testing for alkenes: Markovnikov's rule and the bromine water test
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Predicting major products of HBr addition with Markovnikov's rule and carbocation stability, then the bromine water and acidified permanganate tests for alkenes, with equations and a yield calculation.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Describe the test for a carbon–carbon double bond using bromine water, including what you would see.
Why is bromine water decolourised by an alkene?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Predict the major product when hydrogen bromide adds to but-1-ene and justify your choice.
Model answer
The major product is 2-bromobutane, because the hydrogen adds to carbon 1 to give the secondary carbocation CH₃CH₂CH⁺CH₃ in preference to the less stable primary ion CH₃CH₂CH₂CH₂⁺ that would be produced the other way round.
- 2
Predict the major product of the reaction between 2-methylpropene and hydrogen bromide.
Model answer
The major product is 2-bromo-2-methylpropane, because adding hydrogen to the CH₂ end of (CH₃)₂C=CH₂ gives the tertiary carbocation (CH₃)₃C⁺, which is more stable than the primary alternative, so the bromide ion attaches to the central carbon.
- 3
Predict the major product when hydrogen bromide adds to 2-methylbut-2-ene.
Model answer
The major product is 2-bromo-2-methylbutane; in CH₃C(CH₃)=CHCH₃ the hydrogen adds to carbon 3, which already bears a hydrogen, generating a tertiary carbocation at carbon 2, and the bromide ion then attaches there.
- 4
Why does the addition of hydrogen bromide to but-2-ene give only one product?
Model answer
But-2-ene is symmetrical about the double bond, so whichever carbon the hydrogen adds to, the resulting secondary carbocation and hence the product is 2-bromobutane in both cases.
- 5
Why does the addition of HBr to ethene raise no question of a major and minor product?
Model answer
Ethene is symmetrical, with two hydrogen atoms on each of the doubly bonded carbons, so only one carbocation and only one product, bromoethane, can be formed.
- 6
What is the major product of the reaction between propene and hydrogen chloride?
Model answer
The major product is 2-chloropropane, formed through the more stable secondary carbocation, with 1-chloropropane produced only in small amounts.
