Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What does a Boltzmann distribution curve show?

    Model answer

It shows how the molecular energies in a sample of gas are spread out at a given temperature: the number of molecules is plotted against energy, so the curve shows how many molecules have each energy.

  2. 2

Why does a Boltzmann distribution curve start at the origin?

    Model answer

Because no molecule in the sample has zero energy; every molecule is moving and possesses some kinetic energy, so the number of molecules with exactly zero energy is nought.

  3. 3

Why does the Boltzmann curve approach the energy axis at high energy but never touch it?

    Model answer

There is no upper limit to the energy a molecule can have. However high the energy chosen, a very small number of molecules will have at least that much, so the curve continues to fall towards the axis without ever reaching it.

  4. 4

What does the total area under a Boltzmann distribution curve represent?

    Model answer

It represents the total number of molecules in the sample.

  5. 5

How is the activation energy shown on a Boltzmann distribution curve, and what does the area beyond it represent?

    Model answer

The activation energy is marked as a vertical line at that energy on the horizontal axis. The area under the curve to the right of the line represents the number of molecules with at least the activation energy, that is, those able to react on collision.

  6. 6

Describe how the shape of the Boltzmann distribution curve changes when the temperature is raised.

    Model answer

The peak becomes lower and moves to the right, towards higher energy, and the curve becomes broader and flatter with a longer high-energy tail. The total area under the curve stays the same, because the number of molecules has not changed.
