Naming organic compounds
- 1 thing to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Twenty recall questions on naming organic compounds.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What three things does the systematic name of an organic compound have to tell you?
Model answer
It must tell you the length of the longest carbon chain containing the main functional group, through a stem such as prop- or but-, what the functional group is, through an ending such as -ene, -ol or -oic acid, and what side groups or substituent atoms are present and which carbon each one is attached to.
- 2
Name the compound (CH₃)₃CH.
Model answer
It is 2-methylpropane, because the longest chain is three carbons long and a methyl group is attached to the middle one.
- 3
Name the compound CH₃CH(CH₃)CH₂CH₂CH₃.
Model answer
It is 2-methylpentane, since the longest chain contains five carbon atoms and the methyl branch is on the second carbon counting from the nearer end.
- 4
Name the compound CH₃CH₂CH(CH₃)CH₂CH₃.
Model answer
It is 3-methylpentane, because the longest chain has five carbons and the methyl group sits on the middle carbon whichever end you count from.
- 5
Why is 2-ethylbutane not an acceptable name for any compound?
Model answer
Whenever an ethyl group is placed on carbon 2 of a butane chain, that ethyl group and part of the original chain form a longer continuous chain of five carbons, so the longest chain has not been chosen and the compound should be named 3-methylpentane.
- 6
Name CH₂=CHCH₂CH₃, and explain why but-3-ene is wrong.
Model answer
It is but-1-ene, because the chain must be numbered from the end that gives the double bond the lowest possible position number, and counting from the other end would wrongly call it but-3-ene.
