Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Why is a reaction mixture heated under reflux rather than simply heated in an open flask?

    Model answer

Many organic reactants and products are volatile and flammable, and heating an open flask would lose them as vapour. In reflux the flask is fitted with a vertical condenser, so vapour rising from the boiling mixture is cooled and runs back into the flask. This allows the mixture to be held at its boiling temperature for a long time, giving the reaction time to go as far as possible, without any loss of material.

  2. 2

Why must reflux apparatus never be completely sealed?

    Model answer

Heating the mixture increases the pressure of vapour inside the apparatus. If there is no opening at the top of the condenser, the pressure builds up and the glassware can crack or the joints can be forced apart, spraying out hot flammable liquid. The top of the condenser is therefore left open to the air.

  3. 3

Why should a flask never be more than about two-thirds full when a liquid is heated under reflux?

    Model answer

Room is needed for the liquid to boil vigorously and for vapour to expand; a flask filled too far can force liquid up into the condenser and carry material out of the reaction mixture.

  4. 4

On what property does simple distillation separate two liquids, and where should the thermometer bulb be placed?

    Model answer

It separates them on the difference in their boiling temperatures: the more volatile component, with the lower boiling temperature, vaporises preferentially and is condensed and collected first. The thermometer bulb should sit level with the side arm at the top of the still head, so that it is in the stream of vapour actually passing into the condenser and reads the boiling temperature of what is being collected.

  5. 5

Describe how you would use a separating funnel to separate an organic product from an aqueous reaction mixture.

    Model answer

Pour the mixture into the funnel with the tap closed, add a suitable organic solvent if one is not already present, and stopper it. Invert and shake to bring the two liquids into intimate contact, opening the tap at intervals to release any pressure build-up. Stand the funnel in a ring and allow the two layers to settle and separate completely. Remove the stopper, open the tap and run the lower layer off into one flask, then pour the upper layer out through the neck into another so that the two are not contaminated.

  6. 6

You are not sure which of the two layers in a separating funnel is the aqueous one. How can you find out?

    Model answer

Add a few drops of water to the funnel and watch which layer grows. The added water joins the aqueous layer, so the layer whose volume increases is the aqueous one. In general the denser liquid forms the lower layer, so knowing the densities also tells you which is which.
