Hess's law and energy cycles
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Recall questions on Hess's law and energy cycles.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
When constructing an energy cycle using enthalpy changes of formation, in which direction do the arrows point?
Calculate the enthalpy change for 2Al(s) + Fe₂O₃(s) → Al₂O₃(s) + 2Fe(s), given ΔfHꝊ(Fe₂O₃) = ‒824 kJ mol⁻¹ and ΔfHꝊ(Al₂O₃) = ‒1676 kJ mol⁻¹.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State Hess's law.
Model answer
Hess's law states that the total enthalpy change for a chemical reaction is the same whatever route is taken from reactants to products, provided the initial and final conditions are the same.
- 2
Which fundamental principle is Hess's law a consequence of?
Model answer
The law of conservation of energy. If two routes between the same starting point and the same finishing point gave different enthalpy changes, energy could be created or destroyed by going round the cycle.
- 3
Why is Hess's law useful to a chemist?
Model answer
It allows enthalpy changes that cannot be measured directly, such as most enthalpy changes of formation, to be calculated from other values that can be measured, by constructing a cycle of reactions with known enthalpy changes.
- 4
When constructing an energy cycle using enthalpy changes of combustion, in which direction do the arrows from the reactants and from the products point?
Model answer
Both point downwards to the same combustion products, since every carbon-containing substance in the cycle can be burned to carbon dioxide and water. The cycle is then closed by going from the reactants down and back up to the products.
- 5
When constructing an energy cycle using enthalpy changes of formation, in which direction do the arrows point?
Model answer
Upwards from the constituent elements in their standard states to the reactants and to the products, since each formation reaction starts from the elements. The route from reactants to products then goes down to the elements and back up again.
- 6
Write the general expression for a reaction enthalpy calculated from standard enthalpy changes of formation.
Model answer
ΔrHꝊ = ΣΔfHꝊ(products) ‒ ΣΔfHꝊ(reactants), with each value multiplied by the number of moles in the balanced equation.
