Concentration, solubility and titration calculations: concentration in mol dm-3 and in g dm-3
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Recall questions on concentration in mol dm-3 and in g dm-3.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why does a volume in cm³ have to be converted to dm³ in a concentration calculation?
What mass of sodium hydroxide is needed to prepare 500 cm³ of a 0.100 mol dm⁻³ solution?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by the concentration of a solution?
Model answer
It is the amount of solute dissolved in a stated volume of solution, most often expressed as moles per cubic decimetre, mol dm⁻³, or as grams per cubic decimetre, g dm⁻³.
- 2
Write the relationship between amount of solute, concentration and volume, and state the units that go with it.
Model answer
n = c × V, where n is the amount in mol, c the concentration in mol dm⁻³ and V the volume in dm³. A volume measured in cm³ must be divided by 1000 before it is used.
- 3
Why does a volume in cm³ have to be converted to dm³ in a concentration calculation?
Model answer
Concentration in mol dm⁻³ is defined per cubic decimetre, and 1 dm³ = 1000 cm³. Using cm³ directly would make the answer a thousand times too large.
- 4
Calculate the concentration in mol dm⁻³ of a solution made by dissolving 5.85 g of sodium chloride in water and making the volume up to 250 cm³.
Model answer
M(NaCl) = 58.5 g mol⁻¹, so n = 5.85 ÷ 58.5 = 0.100 mol. The volume is 250 ÷ 1000 = 0.250 dm³, so c = 0.100 ÷ 0.250 = 0.400 mol dm⁻³.
- 5
What mass of sodium hydroxide is needed to prepare 500 cm³ of a 0.100 mol dm⁻³ solution?
Model answer
n = c × V = 0.100 mol dm⁻³ × 0.500 dm³ = 0.0500 mol. With M(NaOH) = 40.0 g mol⁻¹, the mass required is 0.0500 × 40.0 = 2.00 g.
- 6
Express a 0.200 mol dm⁻³ solution of sodium hydroxide as a concentration in g dm⁻³.
Model answer
Multiply by the molar mass: 0.200 mol dm⁻³ × 40.0 g mol⁻¹ = 8.00 g dm⁻³.
