Coupling reactions and azo dyes: coupling of benzenediazonium salts with phenols
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 4
Overview
Eleven recall questions on coupling reactions and azo dyes: coupling of benzenediazonium salts with phenols.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What conditions are used to couple a benzenediazonium salt with phenol?
What is formed when a cold benzenediazonium salt solution is coupled with phenylamine?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What conditions are used to couple a benzenediazonium salt with phenol?
Model answer
The phenol is dissolved in sodium hydroxide solution and cooled in ice, and the cold diazonium salt solution is added to it. Everything is kept below 10 °C so that the diazonium salt does not decompose before it can react.
- 2
What is seen when cold benzenediazonium chloride solution is added to alkaline phenol solution?
Model answer
A yellow-orange precipitate forms straight away. It is an azo compound, 4-hydroxyazobenzene, in which the two rings are joined by an –N=N– bridge.
- 3
Why is the phenol dissolved in alkali rather than simply in water?
Model answer
The alkali converts the phenol into the phenoxide ion, which carries a full negative charge on the oxygen and pushes electron density into the ring far more strongly than a neutral hydroxyl group. The ring is therefore much more strongly activated, which matters because the diazonium ion is only a weak electrophile.
- 4
Which position on the phenol ring does the coupling take place at, and why?
Model answer
It takes place at the position directly opposite the hydroxyl group, that is at position 4. The oxygen directs incoming groups to positions 2 and 4, and position 4 is favoured because it is the least crowded.
- 5
What type of reaction is the coupling of a diazonium salt with a phenol?
Model answer
It is electrophilic substitution on the phenol ring. The diazonium ion acts as the electrophile and replaces a hydrogen atom on the activated ring.
- 6
Write an equation for the coupling of benzenediazonium chloride with phenol.
Model answer
The equation can be written C₆H₅N₂⁺Cl⁻ + C₆H₅OH → C₆H₅N=NC₆H₄OH + HCl. In practice the alkali present converts the phenol to the phenoxide and neutralises the hydrogen chloride as it forms.
