Esters and acid chlorides
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 4
Overview
Recall questions on Esters and acid chlorides.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is an acid chloride a better reagent than a carboxylic acid for making an ester?
What conditions are needed to hydrolyse an ester in acid, and what are the products?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What reagents and conditions are used to make an ester from a carboxylic acid?
Model answer
The carboxylic acid is heated under reflux with an alcohol and a few drops of concentrated sulfuric acid as catalyst. The reaction is slow and reaches an equilibrium rather than going to completion.
- 2
Write an equation for the formation of ethyl ethanoate from ethanoic acid.
Model answer
The equation is CH₃COOH + CH₃CH₂OH ⇌ CH₃COOCH₂CH₃ + H₂O. Ethanol supplies the alkyl group of the ester and water is the other product.
- 3
Why does an esterification never give a complete conversion, and how can the yield be improved?
Model answer
The reaction is reversible and settles at an equilibrium in which appreciable amounts of the acid and alcohol remain. Using a large excess of the cheaper reactant, or removing the water as it is formed, shifts the position of equilibrium towards the ester.
- 4
What are the two roles of the concentrated sulfuric acid in an esterification?
Model answer
It acts as a catalyst, providing protons that make the carbonyl carbon of the acid more open to attack, so that equilibrium is reached faster. It is also a dehydrating agent, absorbing some of the water formed and so pulling the position of equilibrium towards the ester.
- 5
Name the ester formed from propanoic acid and methanol.
Model answer
Methyl propanoate is formed. The first part of the name comes from the alcohol and the second part from the acid.
- 6
Which acid and which alcohol would you use to make butyl ethanoate?
Model answer
Ethanoic acid supplies the ethanoate part and butan-1-ol supplies the butyl part. They would be refluxed together with a few drops of concentrated sulfuric acid.
