Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What rules let you assign oxidation numbers to the atoms in a compound?

    Model answer

An uncombined element is zero; a simple ion has an oxidation number equal to its charge; in compounds hydrogen is usually +1 and oxygen usually −2; fluorine is always −1. The oxidation numbers in a neutral compound sum to zero, and in an ion they sum to the charge on the ion.

  2. 2

What is the oxidation number of manganese in the manganate(VII) ion, MnO₄⁻?

    Model answer

Each oxygen is −2, giving 4 × (−2) = −8. The total must equal the ionic charge of −1, so the manganese is +7, since +7 − 8 = −1. The Roman numeral in the name states this value directly.

  3. 3

Work out the oxidation number of chromium in Cr₂O₇²⁻.

    Model answer

The seven oxygens contribute 7 × (−2) = −14. For the total to be −2 the two chromium atoms must supply +12, so each chromium is +6.

  4. 4

What is the oxidation number of sulfur in sulfuric acid?

    Model answer

In H₂SO₄ the two hydrogens give +2 and the four oxygens give −8, a running total of −6. The molecule is neutral, so the sulfur must be +6.

  5. 5

Deduce the oxidation number of nitrogen in the ammonium ion and in the nitrate ion.

    Model answer

In NH₄⁺ the four hydrogens give +4 and the total is +1, so nitrogen is −3. In NO₃⁻ the three oxygens give −6 and the total is −1, so nitrogen is +5.

  6. 6

Hydrogen is usually +1, but what is its oxidation number in sodium hydride, NaH?

    Model answer

It is −1. Sodium is a metal and always +1 here, so hydrogen must be −1 for the compound to be neutral. Hydrogen takes −1 whenever it is bonded to a less electronegative metal.
