Hydrolysis and reduction of nitriles and amides
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 4
Overview
27 recall questions on hydrolysis and reduction of nitriles and amides.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is formed when benzonitrile, C₆H₅CN, is refluxed with dilute sulfuric acid?
What acid is obtained by hydrolysing 2-hydroxypropanenitrile?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What conditions are needed to hydrolyse a nitrile in acid, and what are the products?
Model answer
The nitrile is heated under reflux with an excess of dilute hydrochloric or sulfuric acid. The products are the carboxylic acid and an ammonium salt, since the ammonia released is protonated in the acidic mixture.
- 2
Write an equation for the acid hydrolysis of ethanenitrile using dilute hydrochloric acid.
Model answer
The equation is CH₃CN + 2H₂O + HCl → CH₃COOH + NH₄Cl. Both the water and the hydrochloric acid are consumed, so the acid must be present in excess.
- 3
What conditions are needed to hydrolyse a nitrile in alkali, and what are the products?
Model answer
The nitrile is heated under reflux with aqueous sodium hydroxide. The products are the sodium salt of the carboxylic acid and ammonia gas.
- 4
Write an equation for the alkaline hydrolysis of propanenitrile.
Model answer
The equation is CH₃CH₂CN + H₂O + NaOH → CH₃CH₂COONa + NH₃. Sodium propanoate is formed and ammonia is driven off.
- 5
How would you obtain the free carboxylic acid after hydrolysing a nitrile in alkali?
Model answer
Add an excess of dilute hydrochloric or sulfuric acid to the cooled mixture. This protonates the carboxylate ion and liberates the carboxylic acid, which can then be distilled or extracted.
- 6
What would you smell and see during the alkaline hydrolysis of a nitrile?
Model answer
Ammonia is given off, so there is a sharp pungent smell and damp red litmus paper held at the mouth of the condenser turns blue. A glass rod dipped in concentrated hydrochloric acid gives white smoke of ammonium chloride.
