Boron nitride: two structures, two sets of properties
- 2 things to know
- A2 Unit 3
Overview
Recall questions on two structures and two sets of properties.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is hexagonal boron nitride a good high-temperature lubricant?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Boron nitride has the empirical formula BN. Why are its structures so similar to those of carbon?
Model answer
A boron atom and a nitrogen atom together provide the same number of valence electrons as two carbon atoms, three plus five against four plus four. Boron nitride is therefore isoelectronic with carbon and can adopt both a layered structure like graphite and a tetrahedral one like diamond.
- 2
Describe the structure of hexagonal boron nitride.
Model answer
It is a giant covalent layer structure. Flat sheets are built from hexagonal rings in which boron and nitrogen atoms alternate, each atom being covalently bonded to three others in the same layer. The layers are stacked so that boron in one layer sits directly above nitrogen in the next, and are held together only by weak van der Waals forces.
- 3
Why is hexagonal boron nitride a good high-temperature lubricant?
Model answer
The covalent bonding within each layer is strong, but the forces between layers are weak van der Waals forces. The layers therefore slide over one another easily, and because the material is a stable ceramic rather than an organic oil it keeps working at temperatures where conventional lubricants would decompose.
- 4
Graphite conducts electricity but hexagonal boron nitride, which has the same layer structure, does not. Explain the difference.
Model answer
In graphite each carbon has a spare electron in a p orbital, and these electrons are delocalised over the layer and free to move. In boron nitride nitrogen is much more electronegative than boron, so the corresponding electrons are held closely on the nitrogen atoms rather than being delocalised, and there are no mobile charge carriers.
- 5
Hexagonal boron nitride is sometimes called white graphite. Why is it white when graphite is black?
Model answer
Graphite is black because its delocalised electrons absorb light across the whole visible range. In boron nitride the electrons are localised on nitrogen and the energy gap is far too large for visible light to promote them, so no visible light is absorbed and the solid appears white.
- 6
Describe the structure of cubic boron nitride.
Model answer
It is a giant covalent structure like diamond, in which every boron atom is covalently bonded to four nitrogen atoms and every nitrogen to four boron atoms, tetrahedrally arranged with bond angles of about 109.5°. The whole crystal is one continuous three-dimensional network.
