What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why does a process that produces a large amount of waste cost more to run than the price of the wasted material alone suggests?
Why do decisions about chemical manufacture involve judgements that chemistry alone cannot settle?
Explain how sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere leads to acidified rainfall, and give equations.
Calculate the percentage atom economy for ethanol produced by C₆H₁₂O₆ → 2C₂H₅OH + 2CO₂. (Mr values: C₆H₁₂O₆ 180.0, C₂H₅OH 46.0, CO₂ 44.0).
Why is preventing waste regarded as better practice than treating waste after it has been produced?
Define the percentage atom economy of a reaction.

Questions from this topic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Give three ways in which large-scale chemical synthesis has improved everyday life.
Model answer
It supplies medicines that treat and prevent disease, fertilisers that raise crop yields and so help feed a growing population, and materials such as polymers, alloys and ceramics that make everything from packaging to surgical implants possible. Chemicals for treating drinking water are a further example, since they prevent waterborne disease on a vast scale.
- 2
Why is the choice of feedstock an economic as well as a chemical decision for a manufacturer?
Model answer
The feedstock is often the largest single cost, so a cheap and readily available starting material can decide whether a process is worth running at all. Its cost also depends on how plentiful the raw material is, how far it has to be transported and whether supply is secure over the lifetime of the plant.
- 3
Why might a manufacturer accept a lower percentage yield in order to obtain a faster rate?
Model answer
A plant that produces a smaller proportion of product but does so quickly can make far more material per day than one that eventually reaches a high yield but takes hours to get there. Since the plant, the labour and the heating all cost money for every hour they run, the total cost per tonne can be lower even at the reduced yield, and any unreacted material can often be recycled.
- 4
Why does using a catalyst usually reduce the cost of a manufacturing process?
Model answer
A catalyst allows an acceptable rate at a lower temperature, so much less fuel is burned to heat the reactors. Because it is not consumed, the same catalyst serves for a very large quantity of product, so its purchase cost is spread thinly and is repaid many times over in saved energy.
- 5
Suggest why building a chemical plant is often welcomed by a local community but also opposed by some of its residents.
Model answer
It creates skilled and unskilled employment, brings income to local suppliers and can fund improvements to roads and services. Against that, residents may be concerned about traffic, noise, odour, the visual effect on the landscape and the risk, however small, of an accidental release of a hazardous substance.
- 6
Explain why the energy released per gram matters when a fuel is chosen for transport.
Model answer
A vehicle has to carry its own fuel, so a fuel that releases more energy for each gram allows a given journey to be made with less mass on board. Methane, for instance, releases about 55.6 kJ g⁻¹ against about 29.7 kJ g⁻¹ for ethanol, so a smaller mass of methane delivers the same energy.
