Hydrogenation and addition polymers: nature of addition polymerisation
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Recall questions on addition polymerisation.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Give the repeat units of poly(propene) and poly(chloroethene), and explain why addition polymerisation has an atom economy of 100%.
How do you work out the monomer from a given repeat unit?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is addition polymerisation?
Model answer
Addition polymerisation is the joining together of a very large number of small unsaturated molecules, in which each double bond opens up so that the monomers link into one long saturated chain, with no other product formed.
- 2
What happens to the π-bond of each monomer during addition polymerisation?
Model answer
The π-bond of each monomer breaks, and the two electrons released are used to form new σ-bonds to the neighbouring monomer units on each side, so the polymer chain contains only single carbon–carbon bonds.
- 3
Draw out in words the repeat unit of poly(ethene).
Model answer
The repeat unit is –CH₂–CH₂–, written inside brackets with the bonds passing out through each side of the brackets and a subscript n outside to show that the unit is repeated many times.
- 4
Give the repeat unit of poly(propene).
Model answer
The repeat unit is –CH₂–CH(CH₃)–, drawn in brackets with a bond emerging from each side and n written outside.
- 5
Chloroethene, CH₂=CHCl, is polymerised. Give the name and the repeat unit of the polymer.
Model answer
The polymer is poly(chloroethene), often called PVC, and its repeat unit is –CH₂–CHCl–.
- 6
A polymer has the repeat unit –CF₂–CF₂–. Name the polymer and the monomer it was made from.
Model answer
The polymer is poly(tetrafluoroethene) and the monomer is tetrafluoroethene, CF₂=CF₂, in which the double bond is restored between the two carbon atoms of the repeat unit.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo

Every question in Hydrocarbons, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
