Questions from this topic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the academic stage of qualifying as a solicitor?
Model answer
A candidate needs a degree or an equivalent qualification before qualifying as a solicitor. A law degree is not essential, because a non-law graduate takes the same assessments.
- 2
What replaced the Legal Practice Course route for new solicitors?
Model answer
The Solicitors Qualifying Examination replaced the Legal Practice Course route from 1 September 2021. Transitional arrangements allow those who had already begun the old route to finish it.
- 3
What are the two parts of the Solicitors Qualifying Examination?
Model answer
The first part tests functioning legal knowledge by multiple choice assessment. The second part tests practical skills such as advocacy, interviewing and drafting.
- 4
What work experience must a candidate complete before admission as a solicitor?
Model answer
A candidate must complete two years of qualifying work experience. The experience may be gained in as many as four different organisations.
- 5
What character and suitability requirement must be met before admission as a solicitor?
Model answer
The Solicitors Regulation Authority must be satisfied that a candidate has the required character and suitability. Previous dishonesty or a serious criminal conviction can prevent admission.
