Building a Desktop Solution with a Database
Binding the database to the interface
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 2
Overview
Binding source, grid control used for in a database application and most common fault when saving from a bound form.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is the most common fault when saving from a bound form?
How is a calculated value shown on a bound form?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does it mean to bind a control to data?
Model answer
Binding connects a control on a form to a column of an in-memory table, so the control shows the current row's value and any edit the user makes is written back into that table without code.
- 2
What is a binding source, and what does it add?
Model answer
A binding source sits between the data and the controls, holding which row is current and offering methods to move between rows, add and delete. Every control bound through it therefore shows the same row.
- 3
How do several controls on one form stay on the same record?
Model answer
They are all bound through the same binding source, which holds a single notion of the current row, so moving to the next record updates every bound control at once.
- 4
How is a list control filled from a related table?
Model answer
The list is bound to the related table for its contents, told which column to display and which to store, and its selected value is bound to the foreign key column of the record being edited.
- 5
Why is a list bound to a related table better than a typed code?
Model answer
Choosing from the related table guarantees the value exists, so referential integrity cannot be broken, and it removes both mistyping and the need for the user to remember codes.
- 6
What is a grid control used for in a database application?
Model answer
A grid shows many rows at once and is bound to a whole table, which suits displaying the lines of an order or the results of a search, with the detail of one record shown on a separate bound form.
