Third normal form
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1
Overview
Transitive dependency, mnemonic for third normal form and relationship between third normal form and the ER model.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What anomaly does a transitive dependency cause?
Why is third normal form usually treated as far enough?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
When is data in third normal form?
Model answer
Data is in third normal form when it is in second normal form and no non-key attribute depends on another non-key attribute.
- 2
What is a transitive dependency?
Model answer
A transitive dependency exists where the key determines one non-key attribute, which in turn determines another. The employee number determines the department code, and the department code determines the department name.
- 3
How is a transitive dependency removed?
Model answer
The attribute that does the determining, together with the attributes it determines, moves to a new table keyed on the determining attribute, which stays in the original table as a foreign key.
- 4
Take an Employee table holding employee number, name, department code and department name to third normal form.
Model answer
DepartmentName depends on DepartmentCode rather than on EmployeeNo, so DepartmentCode and DepartmentName move to a Department table keyed on DepartmentCode. Employee keeps EmployeeNo, Name and DepartmentCode as a foreign key.
- 5
State the mnemonic for third normal form.
Model answer
Every attribute depends on the key, the whole key and nothing but the key: the key gives first normal form, the whole key gives second, and nothing but the key gives third.
- 6
Take a Product table holding product code, description, unit price, supplier code and supplier name to third normal form.
Model answer
SupplierName depends on SupplierCode, which is a transitive dependency, so both move to a Supplier table keyed on SupplierCode. Product keeps the code, description, unit price and SupplierCode as a foreign key.
