Throwing exceptions and writing an exception class
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Custom exception class, exception propagation and rethrowing an exception.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why would a programmer raise an exception on purpose?
A setter is passed a negative price. Compare returning false with raising an exception.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does the keyword throw do?
Model answer
The keyword throw raises an exception deliberately at the point it is written, abandoning the rest of the method and passing the exception object out to the caller.
- 2
Why would a programmer raise an exception on purpose?
Model answer
A method given an argument it cannot work with raises an exception to tell the caller the operation cannot be performed, rather than quietly returning a meaningless result.
- 3
Write a statement that raises an exception carrying a message.
Model answer
A statement such as throw new IllegalArgumentException("Age cannot be negative"); creates the exception object and raises it in one step.
- 4
A setter is passed a negative price. Compare returning false with raising an exception.
Model answer
Returning false leaves the caller free to ignore the result and carry on, while an exception forces the caller either to handle the failure or to let it travel further, so the bad value cannot be overlooked.
- 5
What is a custom exception class?
Model answer
A custom exception class is one the programmer writes, extending an existing exception type, so a fault peculiar to the application can be named and caught on its own.
- 6
How is a custom exception class declared?
Model answer
A custom exception is declared as a class extending Exception, with a constructor that passes a message up to the base class using super.
