What must a toolbar button provide because its icon may not be understood?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a toolbar?
Model answer
A toolbar is a strip of small buttons, usually showing icons, giving one-click access to the commands used most often.
- 2
Why does a toolbar button usually show an icon rather than a caption?
Model answer
An icon takes far less width than a word, so a row of them fits across the form and each is recognised at a glance once learned.
- 3
What must a toolbar button provide because its icon may not be understood?
Model answer
A toolbar button must provide a tooltip naming the command, so a user who does not recognise the picture hovers and reads it.
- 4
Why should a toolbar button and its menu equivalent call the same method?
Model answer
Calling one shared method means the behaviour is written once, so the two routes into the command cannot drift apart when the code changes.
- 5
What is a toggle button on a toolbar used for?
Model answer
A toggle button on a toolbar shows a setting that is either on or off, such as bold text, and stays pressed in while that setting applies.
- 6
How should a toolbar behave when a command is unavailable?
Model answer
The button should be greyed out and ignore clicks, which tells the user the command exists but cannot be used at the moment.
