Graphical User Interface Objects and Events
Properties, methods and events of a GUI object
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Property of a GUI object, method of a GUI object and event in the context of a GUI object.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a method of a GUI object?
Give the key difference between setting a property and calling a method.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a property of a GUI object?
Model answer
A property is a stored characteristic of a control such as its wording, colour, size or enabled state, and a property is read or set in code.
- 2
What is a method of a GUI object?
Model answer
A method is an action a control can be told to carry out, such as clearing itself, taking the focus or repainting.
- 3
Give the key difference between setting a property and calling a method.
Model answer
Setting a property changes a value the control stores, while calling a method makes the control do something at that moment.
- 4
What is an event in the context of a GUI object?
Model answer
An event is a notification the control sends out when something happens to it, such as being clicked, changed or given the focus.
- 5
Explain why a GUI object is an object in the object oriented sense.
Model answer
A control bundles its own data as properties and its own behaviour as methods, so a control is an instance of a class like any other object.
- 6
In Java, why is the wording of a label reached through getText and setText rather than through a public field?
Model answer
The accessor methods keep the field private, so the control repaints itself whenever the wording changes and no outside code can leave it inconsistent.
