UML modelling and simple diagrams
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1
Overview
Four elements of a use case diagram, UML visibility symbols for public, private and protected members and state machine diagram used to model.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Is UML a methodology? Explain your answer.
Distinguish structural from behavioural UML diagrams and give one example of each.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is UML?
Model answer
UML is a standard set of diagram notations for modelling software systems, giving agreed symbols for things such as classes, actors, objects and states so that a model means the same thing to everyone who reads it.
- 2
Is UML a methodology? Explain your answer.
Model answer
UML is not a methodology, because it says nothing about which stages to follow or when to draw anything; UML supplies only the notation, and a methodology decides how it is used.
- 3
Distinguish structural from behavioural UML diagrams and give one example of each.
Model answer
Structural diagrams show what the system is made of and how the parts relate, such as a class diagram, while behavioural diagrams show what happens over time, such as a sequence diagram.
- 4
Name the four elements of a use case diagram.
Model answer
A use case diagram contains actors, use cases, the system boundary that encloses the use cases, and the associations linking each actor to the cases they take part in.
- 5
Can an actor be something other than a person? Give an example.
Model answer
An actor can be any external party that interacts with the system, so a card payment service that the system calls out to is drawn as an actor even though no person is involved.
- 6
Explain the difference between an include and an extend relationship between use cases.
Model answer
An include relationship pulls in behaviour that always happens as part of the base case, such as validating a login on every transaction, while an extend relationship adds behaviour that occurs only under a stated condition, such as offering gift wrapping when the order qualifies.
